Literacy Engagement is imperative - As Jim Cummins (2011) states "There is overwhelming research evidence that literacy engagement is crucial to sustained growth in reading comprehension." (pp. 145-146)

ECI 645 Practicum in Literacy
With ECI 645, Practicum in Literacy, as students we worked collaboratively with Wake County Public School System and worked with students grades 3-5 who needed extra help in their reading. I worked collaboratively with a colleague and we were given a student to work with. We did testing, and from that testing we worked out what we needed to work on with our student. As tutors, it was imperative for us to find something that our students were interested in. With our student, he was a fourth grader who loved animals. He could talk about animals all day with us if we had let him. Therefore using his love of animals helped us to create a plan to work around in reading books about interesting and amazing animals and at the end of the semester we created a website about the interesting animals that he learned and read about himself to show to family and friends.

Close Reading
Close reading I believe is very important for student engagement. In the video above, I am detailing how I would use Polar Bear Boy during a close reading activity with my students. Joanna P. Williams, a contributing author in Research-Based Practices for Teaching Common Core Literacy, states close reading "will motivate and engage students because they will be learning new and interesting things from worthwhile books." (p. 85) I have learned that close reading, if a teacher has "buy in" will find books that will engage, motivate students to a level beyond what they may do if they were looking at the same book.

One research article that I found had a lot of wonderful information about close reading, and using digital literacy to help the students even engage and understand the text even in a "digital world"

Global Unit
The Global Unit dived into how to engage students to look at themselves but to also look at the world around them. It's not only engaging within the community but globally.
